...PvM Build
(not tested for playability from lvl 1 on a PW)

I was looking through the more resent builds, and one by K'orwyn caught my eye. He took the monk class and used it in a different way. I was wondering how I could tweak it, to see what would happen. I took blackguard for reasons that will be clear as we go through.

human, Lawful Evil (to make this character work without penalties you must take human, well and lawful evil)

str 16
wis 10
dex 12
int 10
con 10
cha 16

I took the same stats as K'orwyns spell res paladin. The difference is, i will only increase charisma!

01 monk1 wpn prof: martial / power attack
02 monk2
03 cleric1 extra turning [str / protection]
04 monk3 (make sure you have hide 5 at least)
05 monk4 cha 17
06 monk5 wf: battleaxe
07 monk6
08 monk7 cha 18
09 monk8 toughness
10 monk9
11 monk10
12 bgrd1 Divine Might cha 19
13 bgrd2
14 bgrd3
15 bgrd4 Divine Shield
16 bgrd5 cha 20
17 bgrd6
18 bgrd7 Improve crit: battleaxe
19 monk11
20 monk12 cha 21
21 monk13 epic wf: battleaxe
22 monk14
23 monk15
24 monk16 epic prowess cha 22
25 monk17
26 monk18
27 monk19 great charisma I cha 23
28 monk20 cha 24
29 monk21
30 monk22 great charisma II cha 25
31 monk23
32 monk24 cha 26
33 monk25 great cha III/ imp spell res 1 cha 27
34 monk26
35 monk27
36 monk28 great cha IV cha 29
37 monk29
38 monk30 armor skin
39 monk31 imp spell res 2
40 monk32 cha 30

AB (normal battleaxe): 33/28/27/18
AC 27

For 35 ref 31 will 32
spell res 46

skills dis 43 conc 43 tumb 43 hide 5 + 65 leftover

All in all, not an amazing build. The ab is alittle weak (understatement). You take dis to combat a KD attempt, conc to try to beat a taunt. Tumble for, well, bein a monk, hide 5 to qualify for blackguard. THe rest is up to you.

Again, this is something i just tried to see if i could improve on another build. I dont usually play monks. m wondering now if using a kama would be better? a kama and a shield with full plate.. what a sight that would be!

The interesting thing about this build is that you get a fast runner with divine damage. I am sure you could tweak it for dual kama weilding (yes, i have already changed my mind.. i like battleaxes for the crit damage one hand, esp with divine damage added). If you have any suggestions, feel free.

Oh, forgot to add, i took the one cleric lv for the domains! Both str and prot use charisma as a bonus.. i am sure you could drop it for another bgrd lvl, if you wish.

Peace (what a way to end an evil post )

Are you sure you can get a fastrunner with fullplate? Doesn't monk lose all special abilities when equiping armor? And for the battleaxe, wouldn't you get a higher ab with unarmed strike?

only some thoughts... Monk speed appears to still work in heavy armor.. I had great fun when I got bored putting my monk in heavy armor and grab a greatsword and just stand around speeding after people to scare em

-DaMouse With regards to the empty hands and the kama i suggested: when i was posting the build, it was late! The wpn you take is up to you, but unarmed and kama really wouldnt fit (after reflection). If you were to take them as focus, you wouldnt need black guard lvls. The build is to use a class in a different way, not to maximize your ab or ac or whatever.

Why i took battleaxe? Simply the critcal *3. I get frustrated, as of late, with the seemingly wimpy output of critting with a scrimter for 20! If i had done this a few months ago, i am sure i would have tried to work it with a bastard sword or kukris!

Peace You have a decent amount of skill points, I'd say change the build like this:

01 cleric1 extra turning [str / protection], power attack
02 monk1
03 monk2 wpn prof: Exotic

And then change the weapon you use to Dwarven Waraxe.

2 more dmg per round in exchange for 8 skill points, I think it's worth it. thanks for that. I tried doing it, but alas, you are unable to make a lv 1 cleric with 10 wisdom You could take toughness instead of martial at level one, switch your cleric level to level 6, then take weapon prof exotic at level 3, extra turning at level 6, and weapon focus dwarven waraxe at level 9. Or keep the cleric level at 3, and push weapon prof exotic to 6. I prefer the former so you can get your hands on the waraxe sooner. But you can definitely do it without losing skill points or changing much else.

Steve Cool, dig the build!

As for monk speed in armor, the game is apparently bugged in this respect. You *do* get to keep your speed, on occasion. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Usually, to get it to come back if it goes away on login, just un-equip and re-equip your armor, and voila! Monk speed once again. Cheesy but doable.

I definitely wouldn't go kama as it's a terrible weapon without the extra monk attacks, which you lose in armor.

I was thinking of something like this (I've recently gottne into evil characters) and will try this out.

Switching the levels around to cleric37/monk1/BG2
gives you tons of magic, the same attack schedule, and nearly the same saves (losing some reflex not so bad with evasion) and the SR with one spell becomes 49. Zen archery/divine spells/feats are a nasty alternative to the damage shield types too. I took monk for the speed. The 7 bg lvls were to get 4 atts/rd. I havent tried your suggestion yet, but im certain you cant get 4 atts with cleric lvld to 37, no mattter how you do it (you need 4 ftr lvls min to do it, as far as i know). Not sure which, but Divine Favor or Divine power (cleric spell levels 1 and 4 respectively) give you a fighter's AB, even if they dont show it on the character sheet. Actually, these two spells in conjunction cause your AB to go up considerably higher than your average pure melee type build.
